Pictures with Santa

13 Nov

Last year we took the girls to Santa’s Workshop in County Village (in Bothell) for pictures with Santa. I plan to do pictures again this year but I would love a place that specializes in puppy visits since Country Village is more for human visitors so we had to bring a blanket in case children with allergies came to visit Santa after we did. I got an email today from Seattle DogSpot with a breakdown of all the places you can take your pup for Santa pics. I love that they put together this list – all of the credit goes to Seattle DogSpot – check out their site for other dog related info.

Shakira’s September 2015 Puppies – 6 weeks old

13 Nov

I love these pictures! I took them shortly after Halloween 2015 and I love the idea of sitting puppies in the pumpkin candy pail so you’ll probably see that one again next year because it really worked out well.

Shakira, our mini labradoodle and Teddy, our mini labradoodle honeymooned in July and on September 25th we had six adorable girls. I wanted to make sure to save these pictures that I posted in available puppies.

This is Lily:

The tiniest girl from the litter:

I love the markings on this little girl. Look at those brows!

This girl reminds me of Shakira when she was a puppy:

This is Bella

I love this first picture! She’s such a cutie!

National Black Dog Day

01 Oct

I had no idea there was such a thing but I’ve been seeing #blackdogday posts on social media so I wanted to share. October 1st is National Black Dog Day, created by Colleen Paige who also founded National Dog Day, National Cat Day and National Puppy Day. We did not have any black dogs until our 4th litter when Beyoncé had 5; they’ve all gone to fantastic homes and now Shakira has had 4 which will go home Nov 20th. I love the look of black dogs but they are definitely hard to photograph. If you have a black dog use #blackdogday to share and show off your cutie! ❤️

Our First Litter Is One Year Old Today!

18 Aug

1 yr old d

Happy 1st birthday to Amelia, Ellie Bay, Luka and Brinkley! Congratulations to mommy Shakira also! Although time feels like it has flown by I can remember all of the emotions I was feeling just a year ago.

This year has been a wild ride! I have 3 smart, beautiful. loyal, amazing female dogs (this is the one time it is truly acceptable to say bitches but I love these girls like they are my daughters so I just can’t). I originally used a friend’s gorgeous mini Goldendoodle, Gizmo, for the first two litters but my husband Andru and I found and purchased Teddy almost 2 years ago and the plan had always been to use him as a stud when he received OFA certificates which he did and he is the father of Beyonce’s July puppies and Shakira’s puppies due in September. If you follow the blog you know we recently added Jay Z as a stud dog, living in a guardian home (with a fantastic human mom and dad) however since he was born in April 2015 he will not be ready for breeding until some time next year. I can’t wait for a Beyonce/JayZ collaboration in 2016! Beautiful red goldendoodles! I already have a deposit for that litter!

I never thought I would love a dog as much as I do – I kiss my girls multiple times every day and I’m not that disgusted when they accidentally  kiss me on the mouth, if I’m done with it I will let them lick off my spoon (I don’t use it afterward), I love having them hang out in our bed and I have even cupped my hands to catch their throw up before (Ewwwwww! Hey pregnancy causes morning sickness in dogs too!). I just cannot believe how much these girls have become a part of my life.

This year has brought on a loss and we had to say goodbye to my first dog, Apple. She was a rescue dog and not for breeding but she was my first experience with the unconditional love that a dog brings in to your life. I had hoped that she would pass in her sleep but that was not the case and I had to make that agonizing decision when it was time to let her go. In the end I’m glad that I was there to hold her for her last breath and I know I made the right decision but that doesn’t make it sting any less (tears right now typing about her, I miss her SO MUCH).

Transitioning from death to life – since Shakira’s first litter of 4 puppies was born one year ago today we’ve had a total of 21 puppies born in our kiddie pool upstairs and I’ve been here for every single one. I’ve cried multiple times from the stress I felt, worrying so hard about my little girl and also crying from the relief and joy that I felt when I saw her successfully whelp her new litter. Although I rarely tell people, I cry when my puppies go to their new home. I love these dogs and I spend an incredible amount of time with them. I don’t put my puppies outside in the backyard to figure things out themselves, they are in our house with me 100%. We have not had a stillborn pup or any complications and I’ve said in previous posts I think that has a lot to do with their raw diet.

I’ve (gently) rejected as many people as I’ve accepted. I’ve created a relationship with every family that has one of my puppies and have told them up front I expect to be in their lives no less than 10 years, let’s shoot for 15 but I want to at least prepare you for 10. We had a Super Bowl party and invited back our families and asked them to bring puppies, we’ve had a reunion to get everyone together, I send out countless texts and emails to check in and see how everyone is doing. I post updates to the blog to let prospective families and friends see how the puppies are doing; I stay in touch! When I say a lifetime of support that isn’t just words. My families actually do feel like family to me and I love having my puppies back for visits!

My husband Andru and I often say we wish we had one of our puppies. I know the work that we do litter box training, crate training, harness training, the early neurological stimulation we do along with the socialization all make a difference. I don’t charge extra for any of these things which I see other breeders advertise and I don’t charge extra if you can’t pick the puppy up when it is exactly 7 weeks old. I’m not in a rush to push these babies out the door.

So let’s talk about sales. Whew! From the outside sales are AMAZING and I should be out shopping for a new Mercedes sometime soon. This is something I’ve been considering blogging about for some time now. I’ve had a few potential families ask for breeding rights ‘because they just want to have one litter’ and I’ve heard a few comments on what a profitable business I have but the truth is dog breeding isn’t very profitable. If you are someone considering breeding, please reach out to me and let’s have a longer conversation. For the people that say they want just one litter – I did not make any profit until my third litter so if you are going to do it, do it right and know this won’t be a money maker for some time. In my very very very long list of expenses I include the cost of Beyonce, Shakira, JLo (but not Teddy or JayZ) and I didn’t start counting expenses until Shakira’s first pregnancy test (which came back negative) on July 23, 2014. In just over a year (plus the cost of our 3 girls) would you care to take a guess at what my expenses have run? Before my big reveal, I want to share this pic which someone posting in one of the breeding groups on FB that I’m a member of. This is so true and really made me laugh…

1 yr old c

My expenses are $25, 291.81. That isn’t a typo. Twenty five thousand dollars! The crazy thing is I wouldn’t change a thing and I plan to continue what I’m doing. In the last year I have brought in $31,745 which means after a year of doing what I love I have made $6,453.19; probably not the return most people are expecting. “Don’t quit your day job” but I’m so happy that I’ve covered the cost to get our girls and have been able to feed them a high quality, raw diet, I’ve provided a fantastic trainer and provided a lifestyle that I feel is the very best for them. Again, if you want more information I’m happy to share. My largest expenses are food and vet bills. My vet is the one that is ready for the new Mercedes! Please keep in mind that my girls eat a LOT while pregnant or lactating so I don’t want to turn anyone off from feeding raw – it can be done on a budget! My girls eat about 6 pounds of food a day which is about $18/day or around $6500 for the year. I don’t want to spend a lot of time focused on the money but I did think it was important to share. I continue to do this because I love it. I love the connections that I’ve made with families. I love getting Christmas cards with my puppies pictures with their new families (I got 2 last year and by Christmas we only had 4 puppies placed). I love getting text updates with pictures and stories. I love everything about breeding dogs!

I want to thank all of the families that trusted me enough to take home one of our puppies and thank them for staying in contact and provided a safe, loving home to these dogs. I want to thank my friends that have come over to help hold, cuddle and socialize puppies – huge shout out to our friend Whitney, who has spent hours hanging out upstairs in my bathroom, sometimes alone, with puppies when her husband, Andru and I have all gone back downstairs and decided to watch a movie, she never seems to get tired of it. Also my friend Karen deserves a special mention as well as she has come to visit every litter and she also lost her dog during the last year to kidney issues as well, and I now know what a tough loss that can be. THANK YOU to my husband, Andru. These dogs take a huge part of my day and I appreciate the help as well as the understanding when I can’t stick to rules like no dogs on the couch or when I spend $25k on DOGS!

Since we have no plans to rehome our girls once they retire (my heart couldn’t take that), I expect that this experience with puppies will only last for a few more years so I plan to enjoy every minute of it. If you are interested in information on breeding, I am happy to answer questions and share my experiences. My goal for the next year is continue the great things we have had in year 1 – my streak of problem free whelping (dog term for baby delivery), happy healthy dogs, happy healthy puppies, families that are a good fit. I have been working with specialists to offer discounted swimming lessons for my puppies in the next year, workshops to learn dog massage, dog photography and have been looking at fun things to add to our reunions going forward. This first year all of my puppies were sold locally and I was really proud of that! I was contacted multiple times from out of state families but I just wasn’t ready to ship. I realize now I may not be able to find homes locally and will expand outside of my area for the first time. I’m always open to suggestions and welcome feedback. If there is a better way for me to be doing something please share! Use the contact me page to reach out via email or call/text me at 917-847-6652.

Whew, I’ve got to let the dogs out! Before I close I wanted to share (with permission) two Facebook updates that I saw this morning from Ellie and Amelia’s mom:

Again, I feel so much gratitude because this experience has brought so much love in to my life. Thank you!

Bentley Is Ready For Play Dates

12 Aug

Bentley9

Bentley was the smallest puppy from Shakira’s March litter; we posted a picture of him in the Starbucks cup when he was about 6 weeks old. I received another updated from Bentley’s mom Barbara and she said…..

I know that Joe has been keeping you up to date on Bentley and he continues to be just the nicest little guy. He has finished Puppy Kindergarten and is about to “graduate” from Puppy Elementary. He loves going to class and playing with his pals there. I noticed that Ellie another one of your puppies mentioned on your blog lives in Seattle and am wondering if she might live anywhere close to us as I’m looking for someone for Bentley to play with.

I’m attaching a picture of Bentley taken about 3-4 weeks ago to show you a toy that he just loves and is very durable and I would think would be lots of fun for puppies with all of it’s legs to pull on. It’s made by Nylabone and I’ve only seen it in the one small pet store by us. I just saw it on chewy.com for a lot less than what I paid for it.

I absolutely LOVE getting updates about these babies! Adding a pictures AND a tip on a great toy that is on sale? This was a real gift! Here is a link to the toy on the Chewy site (currently on sale for $10.61). There are not a lot of reviews and they are not fantastic but I’m going to give it a try and I’ll let you know. JLo was 11 months old yesterday and she is still chewing on toys every day so she’ll be a good tester!

I will plan another reunion soon! Having back to back litters this fall is a first time event for us but I love getting everyone together. I also encourage any local families with a mini doodle to reach out to me and I’d love to include you as well! Let’s plan some puppy play dates!
